Brunei: Will Not Participate in the ABU TV Song Festival 2017

Radio Television Brunei has confirmed that they will not be participating in the ABU TV Song Festival 2017 in Chengdu, China.

The national broadcaster of Brunei has confirmed to Eurovoix World that they will not be returning to the ABU TV Song Festival this year. RTB said in a statement that they would not be returning to the event this year due to planned national celebrations marking the Golden Jubilee of the Sultan of Brunei’s accession to the throne. Celebrations are planned to take place throughout October and November and thus space in the schedule to participate in the ABU TV Song Festival is limited.

Brunei has twice participated in the ABU TV Song Festival. In 2013 the country was one of three nations across Asia to debut in the competition, they were represented by Qeez Idrus with the song “Salahkah Aku”. Brunei participated once again in 2014 represented by Juan Madial. Brunei has not participated in the event since 2014.

The ABU TV Song Festival 2017 will be hosted by Sichuan Radio and Television and is scheduled to take place on November 1st alongside the 54th General Assembly of the ABU. Overseeing the organisation of this years festival are Mr Tatsuhiro Beniko, Mrs Hanizah Hamzah and Ms Lai Kai Yan from the ABU, and Ms. Tang Wangi of the host broadcaster.

To date only the host nation of China and the Maldives have confirmed their participation in this years event in Chengdu.

Since 2012 the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union has organised a non-competitive festival highlighting the talents of its member nations. Countries such as Afghanistan, Brunei, China and the Maldives have participated in the event, showcasing the best of their talented music industry. Songs taking part in the event can be the singers own or a cover. The event is planned to eventually be turned into a competitive contest.
