Interview: Polina Stefoglo – “I am very glad to be a part of this amazing contest”

Polina Stefogolo has spoken to Eurovoix World about what it means to her to represent Moldova at the Turkvision Song Contest 2016.

With the next edition of the Turkvision Song Contest not that far away we spoke to Polina Stefoglo. Polina is representing Moldova on their debut in this years contest and is looking forward to taking to the stage of a contest that she admires so much. We talked to her about how her participation came about, her influences in life, her song and what she is looking forward to about the contest.
Polina Stefoglo, thanks for talking to us, how does it feel to know you will be going to the Turkvision Song Contest?

I am a little excited of course, because Turkvision is the international contest and it is a song and vocal competition, where singers from different countries will fight for the victory. Without any doubt I am very glad to be a part of this amazing contest.

You are representing Moldova on their debut in the contest, how did this come about?

I have been following the contest since 2013 and I am its admirer. Moldova has never participated in Turkvision before as an independent country. Its autonomy Gagauzia took part in the contest, as the Gagauz language is included in the Turkic language group. That’s why naturally I decided to participate in the selection from Gagauzia from the very beginning. We were preparing for the qualifying round the whole year. The song was recorded, the item was staged and the costumes were prepared, but it happened in such a way that I took only the second place. I decided not to give up and I received the official permission from the Moldavian ministry of culture and I sent a request to the contest’s organizers. My candidacy from Moldova was confirmed. I am happy to be the first official representative of Moldova at the Turkvision. This year the contest has extended its geography. A range of european countries will make their debut. In my opinion it’s great as it promotes further popularization.

Going further back, what was it that drew you into singing and who are your biggest musical influences?

I got my love to the music and my abilities from my father Valeriy Stefoglo, the honoured cultural figure of Gagauzia. Unfortunately, he is not with us anymore, but I am continuing my father’s work with love and I deal with creative activity. I would like to dedicate my performance at the Turkvision to my father. I got married after my father’s death. My husband fell in love with my talent and he decided that I must necessarily be on the professional stage. We started to work towards that end. After the victory at the national festival Star of Moldova, Star of Kishinev we recorded my first song “I love”, which I naturally dedicated to my beloved husband.

Can you tell us more about the song you will be performing at the Turkvision Song Contest?

My contest song will be performed in Turkish. The music was composed by Oleg Baralyuk, the lyrics were written by the popular singer Gunesh, who represented Belarus very successfully at the Turkvision 2013. Turkish language is very beautiful and melodious. I think we succeeded in creating a real hit, Turkish audience will definitely admire the song.

“the most important thing for me is to represent my country with dignity”

How important do you feel that the Turkvision Song Contest is for performers like yourself?

The contests are extremely important for a singer and moreover for a beginner. It is a school, big experience which helps the singer to develop. Like any other contest vocal contests teach self-control, self-possession, the ability to concentrate in the right moment and show everything you are capable of.

What are you most looking forward to about taking part in the contest?

I don’t think about that. I want to perform well and prove to myself first of all that I can do what I do at a high level. Probably, subconsciously just like other participants I dream of the victory, but the most important thing for me is to represent my country with dignity. I’d like to thank all the people who are by my side at the stage of the preparation for the contest. Special thanks go to my husband, who is always next to me and who always supports me. His support makes me strong and helps me to believe in myself.
