Rustem Zhugunussov has announced that he will be representing Kazakhstan at the finals of New Wave 2017 in Sochi, Russia.

Rustem Zhugunussov has announced via his Instagram account that he will be representing Kazakhstan at New Wave 2017 in Sochi. Rustam is known to Kazakh audiences having participated in the third season of the X Factor Kazakhstan, he has also released a number of songs with his most well known being played over 400,000 times on YouTube.

In the post on Instagram he said:

Share the good news. I am finalist of the international song contest” New Wave-2017 “. Do not get me wrong, I  went to Moscow without notifying you. I wanted to make a nice surprise. My dream has come true, and I am with you sharing this.

This is not the first time that a member of the singers family has taken part in a New Wave contest. In 2014 his younger brother Mahammadali Zhugunussov took part in New Wave Junior 2014. Mamamadali went on to finish in third place alongside the singers from Belarus and Ukraine.

The dates of the 2017 contest are yet to be announced. New Wave has been held annually since 2002 and has provided a platform for stars within Eastern Europe to be discovered. These include the likes of Nelly Ciobanu, Rin’Go, Intars Busulis and the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, Jamala. Between 16 and 11 singers are normally selected to compete in the final of the competition which is traditionally held in the late Summer or Autumn.

New Wave was first held in 2002 in Jurmala, Latvia. The contest which is held over three days is open to singers age between 16 and 35 years old. The competition is incredibly popular within Eastern Europe with up and coming performers taking to the stage alongside well-known guests from across the region. The contest has been a launching point for many careers including Intars Busulis, Natalia Gordienko and Jamala the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.
