The Kumyk population of the Russian Federation has confirmed that they will be participating in the Turkvizyon Song Contest 2016.
The Kumyks are a Turkic people living in the Kumyk plateau of Northern Dagestan, there are currently 503,000 Kumyks living in the Russian Federation. The Kumyk’s speak the Kumyk language which is part of the Kipchak language group within Turkic languages.
The participation of the Kumyk population in the contest is being organised by “Qumuqlar”. “Qumuqlar” are a group set up specifically for the preservation of the Kumyk language, culture and the development of the Kumyk people.
Kumyk were due to debut in the Turkvizyon Song Contest 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey but were forced to withdraw from the contest due to a deterioration of relations between Turkey and the Russian Federation. In 2015 they selected Gulmira, Fatima and Kamilya with the song “Alga” to represent them. Furthermore they were due to be represented by Karim Salavatov in the Bala Turkvizyon Song Contest.

- Kumyk (Russian Federation)

The Turkvizyon Song Contest was first held in 2013 in the Turkish city of Eskisehir. The contest which is open to Turkic nations and regions such as Turkey, Kazakhstan and Yakutia. The contest follows a similar format to the Eurovision Song Contest, with songs limited to being 4 minutes long. To date Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have won the contest.
