The Kumyk population of Russia will be selecting their participant for the 2016 Turkvision Song Contest and Bala Turkvision Song Contest on NovemberÂ 26.
Kumyk will select their first ever participant in the Turkvision Song Contest on todayÂ in the Capital of Dagestan,Â Makhachkala. The selection of the Kumyk participant in Turkvision 2016 is taking placeÂ during â€œQumuqfestâ€. Qumuqfest will see performances from well known Kumyk performers from Chechnya, North Ossetia, Moscow as well as from across Dagestan. Tickets are on sale now for the event.
The Kumyks are a Turkic people living in the Kumyk plateau of Northern Dagestan, there are currently 503,000 Kumyks living in the Russian Federation. The Kumykâ€™s speak the Kumyk language which is part of the Kipchak language group within Turkic languages. The participation of the Kumyk population in the contest is being organised by â€œQumuqlarâ€. â€œQumuqlarâ€ are a group set up specifically for the preservation of the Kumyk language, culture and the development of the Kumyk people.
Kumyk were due to debut in the Turkvision Song Contest 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey but were forced to withdraw from the contest due to a deterioration of relations between Turkey and the Russian Federation. In 2015 they selected Gulmira, Fatima and Kamilya with the song â€œAlgaâ€ to represent them. Furthermore they were due to be represented by Karim Salavatov in the Bala TurkvisionÂ Song Contest.
