The first Bala Turkvizyon Song Contest is being held next month in Istanbul, Turkey, at this stage 21 countries are set to compete in the show including Macedonia. Macedonia are being represented by Tolga Mazhar the son of the two times Macedonian Turkvizyon participant, Kaan Mazhar. Here is what Tolga had to say:
It’s just three weeks to go until the Bala Turkvizyon Song Contest, how are you feeling?
I’m really excited because this is my first time performing in a song contest. Right now my main focus is to work with the choreography crew as hard as I can.
What was it that you drew you into singing?
My father is a singer and my mom also used to be a singer and um I grew up with music, I started singing at a young age, my parents were always supportive with me and here I am.
Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?
Tricky one. I would say Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Lenny Kravitz, Jesse Rutherford are really the ones I admire. They all inspire me when I write music.
How did it come about that you were selected to represent Macedonia at Bala Turkvizyon and how did it feel when you were told you would be going to the contest?
My father told me that he got a call from Istanbul and he told me that they were looking for a young singer to represent FYR Macedonia at Bala Tukvizyion and he asked me if I want to go and I was like ‘Yeah, sure let’s do it’.
You worked with Darko Dimitriov on your song, he’s written a number of songs for the Eurovision Song Contest, what was it like to work with him?
Darko Dimitrov is a musical genius, a production wizard. Working with him was a dream come true. We had so many ideas, we were constantly writing and recording and mixing, it was a great experience.
The song you are singing is Istanbul is “Hadi Benimle” can you tell us more about it?
Yes, the English translation of Hadi Benimle is Come With Me and it’s not written for anyone in particular. The English version which I will be releasing soon is called Take You There and has a completely different meaning, it has a story behind it and it is written for someone.
What can we expect from your performance in Istanbul?
You can expect a lot of energy, explosive visuals, dancing. For me it’s not just about giving a decent performance, it’s about connecting with the crowd, with the people watching, sharing emotions with them.
Going into Bala Turkvizyon what are you aiming for, are you wanting to win or is it just being able to show your talent to an audience across Europe and Asia?
My main goal is to show my talent not just to the audience across Europe and Asia, but to the entire world and make inspirational music which they can look up to.
In 10 years time what would you like to see yourself doing?
In ten years time I would like to live in a sunny place like California, have a girlfriend, make music and enjoy every second of life.
What would you like to say to readers of Eurovoix-World.com?
If you have a dream, chase it and if it ends up happening, it ends up happening. Everyone has their purpose, everyone has a reason why they are in this world, find your purpose. Sometimes there are bad times in your life when you feel depressed and you have so much pressure and don’t care anymore. Overcome your fears, if you love someone go tell them, if you want to sing something sing it, if you want to write music write it. Life only comes once, so live it like you want, don’t let anyone tell you what to do.
We wish Tolga the best of luck at the Bala Turkvizyon Song Contest and for his future. Listen to Tolgas song below:
