Public Service Media has confirmed that the Maldives will be participating in the ABU TV Song Festival 2017 in Chengdu, China.

PSM confirmed their participation in this years competition following the final of Maldivian Idol. The winner of this years contest Mohamed Thasneem has been offered the chance to represent the Maldives at this years event in China, following in the footsteps of last years participant.

Maldivian Idol is the first international format to have been imported into the Maldives. The show is based upon Idols format which has been exported to 48 countries globally, including Vietnam, the United States, Australia and South Africa.

The Maldives debuted in the ABU TV Song Festival at the 2014 event in Macau. On their debut they were represented by Mooshan with the song “Rannamaari”. In the past two years Unoosha who is a judge on Maldivian Idol and Laisha Junaid the winner of the first season of Maldivian Idol have represented their country at the event.

The ABU TV Song Festival 2017 will be hosted by Sichuan Radio and Television and is scheduled to take place on November 1st alongside the 54th General Assembly of the ABU. Overseeing the organisation of this years festival are Mr Tatsuhiro Beniko, Mrs Hanizah Hamzah and Ms Lai Kai Yan from the ABU, and Ms. Tang Wangi of the host broadcaster.

To date only the host nation of China and the Maldives have confirmed their participation in this years event in Chengdu.

Since 2012 the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union has organised a non-competitive festival highlighting the talents of its member nations. Countries such as Afghanistan, Brunei, China and the Maldives have participated in the event, showcasing the best of their talented music industry. Songs taking part in the event can be the singers own or a cover. The event is planned to eventually be turned into a competitive contest.
