Eurovoix World understands that well known recording artists in the Maldives have shown an interest in participating in the Eurovision Asia Song Contest.

In the Maldives, well known recording artists have shown an interest in taking part in the Eurovision Asia Song Contest. While the interest is in its early stages, singers from across the Asia-Pacific region have shown an interest in the competition. Eurovoix World understands that the recording artists are awaiting additional information about the competition, which is still in its early stages.

The Maldives has two television broadcasters. Public Service Media (Television Maldives) which is the official state broadcaster in the nation and VTV, the only privately operated television network in the Maldives. Both PSM and VTV have shown an interest in Song Contest related content in recent years, with both broadcasters having taken part in the ABU TV Song Festival. VTV took Maldives to their debut appearance in the festival in 2014, while PSM has participated annually since 2015.

Public Service Media has also shown the ability to stage a televised selection process, should they decide to take part in the Eurovision Asia Song Contest. Since 2016, PSM has produced and broadcast Maldivian Idol, the first internationally franchised television program produced in the Maldives.


The Eurovision Asia Song Contest which was announced in March 2016 is expected to see around 20 countries compete in the Asian spin-off of the 61-year-old Eurovision Song Contest which is held annually in Europe. The contest would be the first time that a Eurovision spin-off has been successfully held outside of Europe. Previously the EBU has sold the rights to the contest in Asiathe Arab World and is looking at a US contest.

The three cities that have expressed a serious interest in hosting are:

  • Hong Kong
  • Singapore
  • Sydney, Australia
