Malta is set to be represented by Chess Galea in the Pop Song Performers Contest at Slavianski Bazaar 2019 in Vitebsk.
Malta has selected their participants for Slavianski Bazaar 2019 this July. A total of nine singers competed to represent Malta in Belarus, six in the childrens category and three in the adults category.
In the adults category it was Chess Galea who took victory. Chess was born in Malta and studied music abroad in the United Kingdom. In 2018 she took part in the first series of All Together Now on the BBC. She has sinced released her debut EP.
In the childrens contest Malta will be represented by Leah Gauchi. Leah has performed at a number of contest across Malta as well as internationally.
The Maltese entrants were selected by a jury made up of both Maltese and international jurors. The jury was formed of:
- Evelina Batey – Musicain, vocal coach and producer (Malta)
- Ekaterina Karon – Actress (Russia)
- Sofia Blazacvski – Vocal coach (North Macedonia)
- Marina Klencischeva – Music critic (Latvia)
- Joseph Lia – Teacher & singer (Malta)
What is Slavianski Bazaar?
Slavianski Bazaar has been held annually in Vibetsk, Belarus since 1992. The event consists of two competitive contests, the International Pop Song Performers Contest for singers age 18 to 31, and the Children’s Contest for those age between 7 and 12. The competition is popular in the former Soviet Union, Baltic States and the Balkans. Winners include Ruslana, Zeljko Joksimovic, Donny Montell and Alyona Lanskaya. The Children’s Contest has been held since 2003 and former winners include singers who have gone on to compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. This includes former winner Ksenia Sitnik who won for Belarus in 2005.
