85 Regions Across Russia Are Competing

The second series of the largest singing contest in Russia “” gets underway next weekend with 85 singers vying to be named Russia’s “New Star”.

“Novaya Zvezda” was created in 2014 by the Russian Ministry of Defense as a way of bringing together the 86 regions of the Russian Federation. The contest which is now in its second season sees each region represented by one singer, auditions for the contest took place last summer with over 3,000 singers participating in the auditions across Russia.

The contest works in the following way, each week 12 singers will take to the stage competing to make it through to the second round of the contest. A jury made up of Maksim Dunayevskiy, Zara, Vasiliy Barkhatov, Yuriy Nikolayev and Denis Maydanov all start off with awarding 20 points to the performer, they can then remove points from the singer as the performance goes on. At the end of each episode the six singers with the highest number of points left make it through to the second round.
