At an ABU meeting on Wednesday the South Korean representative has stated the need for the creation of an Asian alternative to the Eurovision Song Contest.
Ms Irene Jungeun Kim spoke at the Media2020 meeting in Beijing, China to gathered representatives of television channels in Asia. Ms Irene Jungeun Kim is the Director of International Relations at KBS the Korean national broadcaster and put specific emphasis on the need for the creation of an Asian version of the Eurovision Song Contest. Also at the meeting in Beijing were representatives of SBS who recently bought the rights to host the Asian version of Eurovision. Both SBS and the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union are currently in the process of creating song contests for Asia.
South Korea has a long history of participation in song contests and song festivals within Asia. The country was the venue for the first ABU TV Song Festival and ABU Radio Song Festival. Furthermore it was one of the 14Â countries signed up to participate in Our Sound: Asia-Pacific Song Contest.
