Vatan Şaşmaz who was one of three presenters at the first Turkvision Song Contest in 2013, has died at the age of 43.

The famous Turkish presenter and author was found murdered on August 27 in Istanbul. According to Police Reports, the presenter was murdered by Filiz Aker, who then proceeded to commit suicide at the scene. During his career Vatan had presented morning television on ATV, before going on to star in a number of different shows on TRT.

Fans of international music will recognise Vatan for his role as a presenter of large television events. In 2013 he presented the first edition of the Turkvision Song Contest alongside Ece Vahapoğlu and Engin Hepileri. He would return again in 2015 to present the Turkvision Song Contest live from Istanbul alongside Oylum Talu.

The Turkvision Song Contest was first held in 2013 in the Turkish city of Eskisehir. The contest which is open to Turkic nations and regions such as Turkey, Kazakhstan and Yakutia. The contest follows a similar format to the Eurovision Song Contest, with songs limited to being 4 minutes long. To date Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have won the contest.
