Sheki in Azerbaijan has today been announced as the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World for 2016 by TURKSOY.
In line with the rules of the Turkvizyon Song Contest the announcement means that Sheki in Azerbaijan will be the host city of next years contest. The Turkvizyon Song Contest was first held in the 2013 Cultural Capital of the Turkic World Eskişehir, Turkey before heading to Kazan, Tatarstan in 2014. This years contest was due to be held in Merv, Turkmenistan before it was moved by TMB TV to the largest city in Turkey, Istanbul.
It remains to be seen how Sheki will be able to host next years contest as it lacks any venue that would be capable of holding the contest. The 2015 contest which was due to be held in Merv was originally moved to Ashgabat the Capital of Turkmenistan due to a more suitable venue being available. It seems likely that the contest will be moved to another city in Azerbaijan, most likely Baku which has the Crystal Hall a 25,000 seat arena built for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. The only other alternative indoor arena in Azerbaijan is the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Azerbaijan won the first Turkvizyon Song Contest in 2013 represented by Farid Hasanov performing the song “Yaşa” which won with a total of 210 points, just 5 points ahead of Belarus.
