VTV, the national broadcaster of Vietnam has announced that the nation will be participating in the ABU Song Contest 2019.
Vietnam is the first country to announce that they will be participating in the inaugural edition of the ABU Song Contest in 2019. VTV revealed the nations participation in the competition at a press conference launching the latest series of Sao Mai (Morning Star). The contest which was first held in 1997, will select the nations first participant in the competition.
The contest is held every years two years and has been a launchpad for a number of well known and popular singers. This years competition has undergone changes with singers now able to be aged up to 27 years. While foreigners living in Vietnam are also now allowed to compete for the first time.
The competition will be held in three stages across Vietnam. The auditions round for southern Vietnam will be held from January 16-20, the central highlands auditions will be held from January 24-27, and the north from January 18-22. In the auditions rounds 15 singers will be selected to go through to the finals which will be held in March and April.
The winner of Sao Mai will represent Vietnam at the ABU Song Contest 2019. The way in which the Vietnamese song for the competition will be selected has not yet been revealed. Sao Mai will be broadcast by VTV6.
VTV has participated in the ABU TV Song Festival annually since it was first held in 2012. The broadcaster also hosted the 2013 edition in Hanoi, and is one of just a handful of broadcasters to have taken part in every edition. The Vietnamese national broadcaster has also taken part in the ABU Radio Song Festival and the ABU International Dance Festival.
