Zambia is one of two countries making their debut appearance in the ABU TV Song Festival, joining a number of countries participating next month in China.
Zambia follows in the footsteps of Tunisia, as the second country to take part in the ABU TV Song Festival. The countries participation in the contest is being organised by the African Union of Broadcasting, which is based in Tunis, Tunisia. The Union has members from a total of fourty-six countries across the continent, including the Zambian national broadcaster, Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.
Zambia will be represented by Hezron Ngosa (Hezijones), who is a well known gospel singer in the country, having released two albums. He has performed not only within Zambia, but also across Africa as well as in the United Kingdom and United States. Hezron also performed at the Inauguration of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu following his election in 2016. At the festival in Chengdu, he will perform the song “Zaninge”.
Since the creation of the ABU TV Song Festival and ABU Radio Song Festival, three African nations have either attempted to or have taken part in the events. In 2012 Sudan attempted to take part in the ABU Radio Song Festival, represented by Abdel Gadir Salim and the song “Bessama”. Sudan was not selected as a finalist. While in 2016 Tunisia made their debut appearance at the ABU TV Song Festival in Bali, Indonesia.

Since 2012 the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union has organised a non-competitive festival highlighting the talents of its member nations. Countries such as Afghanistan, Brunei, China and the Maldives have participated in the event, showcasing the best of their talented music industry. Songs taking part in the event can be the singers own or a cover. The event is planned to eventually be turned into a competitive contest.
